Principal York Named Best Hotel for Second Year at Visit York Tourism Awards 2017

June 23, 2017

The recently restored Principal York has won two accolades at the annual Visit York Tourism Awards 2017, billed as the Oscars of the city’s tourism sector.

Principal York is one of the launch hotels for PRINCIPAL, a collection of ‘local at heart’ landmark hotels in UK city centres. Formerly The Royal York Hotel and newly renovated, Principal York opened to guests on 1 November 2016. The historic grande-dame was crowned both Hotel of the Year and Conference Venue of the Year for the second consecutive year last night at the black tie awards ceremony held in the grand station hall of the National Railway Museum, which is set just beyond the majestic Victorian railway hotel.

Principal York triumphed at the awards following a mix of mystery shopping and rigorous analysis against the entry criteria, triumphing in the competition entered by 130 businesses across the city.

The wins follow a multi-million pound restoration of the hotel’s public spaces by designers Goddard Littlefair, including: the lobby, reception, the Garden Room and 11 bespoke meeting and event spaces. The hotel’s 155 bedrooms and suites, many of which boast unrivalled views of York Minster, have also been refurbished to combine historic architectural detail with all the comforts of the modern day.

The new accolades have been awarded in addition to the hotel’s success at the CHS Awards where Principal York was named Best Large Conference Venue and runner-up as Best Bedroom in the CHS Awards 2017. Other recent award wins include Gold Award for Hospitality Interior Design at the London Design Awards 2016 and Best Hotel Interiors at Lateroom.com’s ‘Simply The Guest’ 2017 awards – the only national industry honours to be based on guest feedback and customer reviews. It also comes at a timely point, as the hotel is this month awarded the Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor.

Richard Mansell, General Manager at Principal York said: ‘It’s incredible to be awarded Conference Venue of the Year and Hotel of the Year for the second year. I am proud to work with a very special team who are dedicated to providing the best possible guest experience, as well as the perfect introduction to the city of York itself.’

Sally Greenaway, Head of Visit York said, ‘We are thrilled for all our winners and finalists and it was a particularly special night for Principal York.  Winning not one but two awards is a great accolade and so richly deserved.’

Originally opened in 1878 as The Royal Station Hotel, Principal York is a magnificent Grade-II-listed hotel situated just outside the Roman walls of one of Britain’s most notable cities. One of the greatest examples of Victorian railway hotels, The Principal York features an impressive Italianate façade of Scarborough brick and Tadcaster stone designed by architect William Peachey.

Principal York is also home to The Refectory Kitchen & Terrace, the hotel’s conservatory-style restaurant, adjacent to which is the lively Chapter House Bar serving local craft beers, spirits and cocktails. The hotel’s elegant Garden Room, next to the main lobby and its sweeping grand staircase, is where guests can enjoy traditional British afternoon tea whilst looking out across manicured lawns to York Minster in the distance.

With a purpose-built events centre, Principal York offers eleven meeting and event spaces as well as a gym and indoor pool.
